Protecting your kids from your divorce

On Behalf of | Feb 29, 2016 | Divorce |

When parents are going through a divorce, they may make promises to one another to make sure that it does not impact the child in any way. Despite these promises, it is not uncommon for the kids to have to deal with the divorce as well. This can cause many problems for both the parents and children, and you need to do everything that you can to prevent that from happening. This posting discusses some of the things that you need to keep in mind as your divorce moves forward.

Keep the best interests of the children in mind

This is an emotionally difficult time for you. You will be under a lot of stress and it can be really challenging to let go of those feelings toward your ex-spouse. Everything that he or she may do may seem designed to make things more impossible.

You need to make sure that you do not put the kids in the middle. The children will have their own needs that must be addressed at this time. It is extremely important that you both commit to making sure that both parents continue to get to spend time with the children.

If custody is contested, in many cases, the court will issue a ruling that allows both parents to remain in the picture. You need to make sure that you do not do anything that would prevent the other parent from being able to have his or her parenting time with the children.

Communication may be tough, but, it is important for the sake of the kids

Talking to your ex-spouse may bring back a lot of the bad feelings about your situation. It can take time for these emotions to pass. However, you and your ex-spouse will have to learn how to talk to one another for the sake of the children. There are things that are going to happen – important events in the child’s life – that you are both going to be a part of, and if you are constantly fighting with your ex, it is going to ruin it for everyone.

Speak to an experienced attorney

An experienced attorney is an extremely important part of any custody dispute. Your attorney will be able to advocate for your best interests and allow you to focus on spending productive time with your children.

If you do not have your own attorney, you might find yourself very confused about the steps that you need to take at this time. You could make a choice that severely restricts the time that you have with the kids, and there will be very little that you can do to change this once the decision has been made.
