How divorce affects children

When a couple divorces, one of the main concerns of conducting the separation is how this will affect the children. This issue is extremely delicate, as it is not only a matter of breaking ties with the couple, but the children can cope with divorce in a negative way. For parents who are concerned about this type of reaction from their children, perhaps the best thing to do is to know what can be done in case the children do not take the separation well.

First of all, it is important to remember that a divorce can be very stressful for children; most do not want their parents to separate, unless the marriage is full of conflicts or other situations unfit for them. In addition, divorce can strain parent-child relationships, it can cause that parents to lose touch with each other, create financial difficulties, and increase conflict between the ex-couple. For all these reasons, most children have difficulties during the transition from divorce, this transition will last as long as the ex-partners need to rebuild a new relationship for the sake of the children; parents who do a good job managing the stress of divorce are often surprised at how quickly children adapt to change.

Divorce also clearly increases the risk of children suffering from psychological and behavioral problems. Problematic children are particularly likely to develop anger and disobedience problems, little respect for rules and school performance may be affected. Some children may suffer from depression for long periods of time, develop anxiety problems or become overly responsible children, who end up caring for their parents instead of being cared for by them.

Despite all this, most children in divorced families mature faster and become much more resilient, as long as parents do a good job managing the stress of divorce. However, many of these children still remember painful issues about separation from their parents, so it is important to be alert and above all listen to children's concerns about divorce.
