Celebrity pet disputes

Some pet owners, consider their pets as members of the family. However, most courts in the US don't, that is the case for California. Pets are considered as property, like if they were a piece of furniture.

So, what happens when a couple that has pets together decides to end their relationship? Who gets to keep the pets? We know that for children there's a legal process for custody, visitation and child support, but what about our pets? If you are a pet owner and want to know more about it we wrote a whole article about pet mediation right here.

If you can relate to the dilemma regarding pet custody, it also reaches to the celebrity circle. Here are some of the most famous celebrity pet disputes.

1. Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. The couple had three dogs together and rumor has it that Melanie wanted to keep them and that this agreement its most likely included in the settlement for the $50 million divorce case.

2. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Tough these two were never married, they did have two adopted dogs. They broke up after the scandal of Kristen's infidelity with a married director Rupert Sanders. Ultimately Robert got to keep the furry friends and there wasn't a big dispute over them.

3. Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams. Apparently after ending their six-year marriage, the divorce settlement talks stalled over the issue of custody for their eight pets - six cats and two dogs. Mandy kept all of them but negotiated pet support payments.

4. Britney Spears and Kevin Federline. It was very public when Kevin won the custody of their two children after Britney's emotional breakdown. Regarding their pets, though the final custody was never publicly revealed, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) wrote an open letter to Kevin asking him to take the dogs.

5. Drew Barrymore and Tom Green. They were married for five months and apparently Tom sought custody for their dog Lassie. However, in this case the court ruled in favor of Drew since she was the original owner of the yellow lab.
